Clinicians & hospitals decide
All clinical matters: suitability, diagnosis, investigations, treatment recommendations, surgery, discharge, fitness to travel and clinical follow-up.
Independent decisions
The HSE determines Cross-Border eligibility and reimbursement. Finance providers independently assess and approve any credit application.

Suitability depends on your individual clinical needs, medical history and ability to travel safely. The treating clinician makes the clinical decision.
HSE CROSS BORDER HEALTHCARE
Understand the pathway before you commit.
The HSE Cross Border Directive scheme may allow eligible people to seek planned treatment in another EU/EEA country and apply for reimbursement of eligible healthcare costs. Patients ordinarily pay the provider first. Rules and reimbursement amounts vary by case.
Administrative support
We help patients understand the process and organise the clinical documentation supplied by the Athens provider.
An important distinction
The HSE decides eligibility and reimbursement. EUTASHealth cannot guarantee either. Travel and accommodation costs are generally outside the scheme.
The pathway does not end when you leave Athens.
Before returning home, the treating clinician reviews your progress and confirms when you are fit to travel. EUTASHealth then helps coordinate the agreed next steps in Ireland.

Clear discharge information and practical arrangements before travel.
Rehabilitation planning
Help arranging appropriate physiotherapy or rehabilitation after returning home, subject to availability.
